At the Edge of a New Year: Reflection, Gratitude & Grounding

Much of the world has already stepped into the new year of 2026.
Before I do, I want to pause and reflect here.

This past year wasn’t easy. For many of us, it held loss, uncertainty, and moments that felt heavier than we expected. Moments that took more from us than we thought we were able to manage. Some things genuinely hurt.

At the same time, there were good things — some of them meaningful and significant. Moments and experiences that created new and happy memories which shaped this year just as much as the difficult parts did.

Alongside those moments were smaller ones. Quiet, grounding reminders that life was still moving. Hearing a familiar voice. Feeling the warmth of the sun. Inhaling the freshness of rain. Noticing the crisp cold of snow. Moments of calm, birdsong, or an animal’s gentle presence. These are the moments we often overlook unless we slow down enough to notice them.

Our minds are very good at replaying the negative moments. I’m guilty of that myself. But when I look back over the past year with a little more space, I can find things that made the harder moments more bearable, even if only slightly.

As this year ends and a new one begins, I’m not making grand declarations or bold promises. I’m simply doing my best to meet the challenges, accept the gains, and stay grateful for the small moments that keep me sustained along the way.

If this new year finds you tired, unsure, or reflective rather than celebratory, that’s okay. You don’t have to have everything figured out right now.

Sometimes just acknowledging what matters — big or small — is enough to start.
